William John (Bill)HARVEY75, of Exeter, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sat 15th October 2022 after a valiant battle with cancer. To honour Bill's 2 main loves "Bridges and People" we are having a celebration of his life on Thursday 10th November. A service will be held at Exeter Cathedral from 2-3pm followed by a reception at The Corn Exchange from 3-5pm. As this is a celebration there is no dress code. Please RSVP by copy and pasting this link into your browser bhal.co/billrsvp We are also delighted to be able to share today that Bill's request for his body to go to research has been accepted and he is off to Bristol University to carry on teaching. Please no flowers. There will be an opportunity to contribute to the upkeep of the cathedral at the service and 2 charities are available for donations in keeping with his passions. Bill’s love of bridges was born at the Clifton Suspension Bridge. He was taken there as a seven year old by his Bristol relatives, and immediately knew what he wanted to do with his life. He was beyond delighted, later in life, to advise on the masonry parts of the structure. Donations to the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust are used to support the visitor centre and educational activities. In short, to inspire the next generation of passionate bridge engineers. Bill’s love of people resulted in a lifetime of giving, which continued well past his diagnosis. Living with a terminal illness is challenging, even bewildering, with ever changing needs and unfamiliar support options. Hospiscare made a big difference to Bill and his family, always available to support and guide us. Bill was, and we are, very grateful. Donations to Hospiscare will help them continue to provide this service to others.

My deepest sympathy to Bill's family and friends. I spent 4 wonderful years at Dundee University as an undergrad where I met Bill. Bill was always one of the first to sign up to the Engineer's Ball and one of the last to leave the dancefloor with Sue. Always with a smile on his face, he was a mentor that was dedicated to sharing knowledge with others. I was privileged to keep in touch with him professionally and to meet him again on a course.
One of his legacies will be the Aberfeldy Golf Course world first long-stay advanced composite bridge over the River Tay. Working with some students to construct this flagship footbridge, Bill would think nothing about taking a trek up a munroe for a 'break'. The topping out party for the footbridge is something that can never be forgotten! Doing the Conga across the River Tay in the early hours of a summer month certainly tested the bridge beyond any British Standard and I am pleased to say no engineers were harmed in the Conga or lost.
