MavisHAWORTHMavis Haworth, of Willows Lane, Accrington, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 11, aged 81 years. Mavis lived most of her life in the Fern Gore area of Accrington, attending Springhill Infant and Junior schools, then later Woodnook Secondary School. During this time she was an active member of St Peters Guides and eventually went on to receive her Duke Of Edinburgh’s Gold Award, presented to her at Buckingham Palace. She was also the first girl in Accrington to receive the award. It was around this time that she met her husband-to-be Tom, a senior scout in St Peters Scout Group. She kept her link with Guiding throughout her life and was a member of her local Trefoil Guild where she had many good friends. She started her working life at Mullards in Blackburn in the valve making department, then after getting married and having her two children, she began working as a nursery nurse at Spring Hill until taking her retirement. In her spare time she loved her garden and would spend hours tending her plants and more recently she also enjoyed knitting and cross stitching. She sadly leaves behind her husband Tom, her sons Keith and Brian, her sister June, her nieces Amanda and Victoria, nephews Kevin and Craig and their children McCoist, Lily and Casey. Mavis will be very sadly missed by all her loving family and friends. A celebration of life funeral will be held at 10.20am, on Monday, February 24, at Accrington Crematorium. Family flowers only please, but donations in memory of Mavis are being welcomed for Medicins Sans Frontiers and may be sent c/o Barton & Hallworth Funeral Service, The Old Foxhill, 136-8 Union Road, Oswaldtwistle.
