Ralph GeorgeHENDRICKSEProfessor M.D. 05.11.26 - 06.05.10. Professor Ralph G. Hendrickse died very peacefully on Thursday the 6th May, 2010 at his home in Heswall, Cheshire surrounded by his family and only a few short months after his beloved wife Begum. He is survived by five loving children William, Margaret, Terry, Nerina, Sandra, eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Ralph was an exceptional man and an outstanding scholar. He was born and grew up in Cape Town and was one of the first and youngest non-white doctors to qualify from Cape Town University, graduating at the top of his class in 1948. His illustrious medical career took him to Durban, Zimbabwe, Scotland and Nigeria before moving to the U.K. in 1969, where he ended his distinguished career as Professor of Tropical Paediatrics and International Child Health and Dean of the School of Tropical Medicine for the University of Liverpool. He will be remembered for many things - his intellect, his breadth of knowledge and interests; as a campaigner and for his roguish humour, sense of fun and unquenchable zest for life. He was above all a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle, and a warm caring colleague, friend and neighbour for whom family and community were always of central importance. Ralph was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his family and wide circle of friends, colleagues and ex-students around the world. The funeral will take place at Heswall Methodist Church on Tuesday, 1st June at 1.00 p.m. Family flowers only. Donations to Canon Collins Trust will be made in Ralph's memory; donations to 'Canon Collins Trust': Unit 22 The Ivories, 6 Northampton Street, N1 2HY or www.canoncollins.org.uk
