JohnHERBERTPeacefully, in his hundredth year, at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, on Monday, May 23rd, Dr John (Jack) Herbert passed away. Former Head of Pontywaun Grammar School, Risca, Newbridge Grammar School, Newbridge, and Lliswerry High School, Newport, he was dearly loved, and will be sadly missed, by his devoted family and many friends. Funeral service to be held at St Mary's Church, Risca, on Tuesday, June 21st at 1.15 pm, followed by private cremation. Family flowers only, please, but donations to Christian Aid Ukraine Appeal in lieu may be made at the service. John Herbert changed my life by building German into a timetable which just had French at Newbridge Grammar school. The result of this move was that I read French and German at Oxford University which Mr Herbert encouraged me to do as one of the first pupils from Newbridge to be admitted into Oxford University. I then went to teach English in Klagenfurt in Austria and met the family that has been an important part of my life ever since. This would never have happened without that change to the timetable and the encouragement to apply for a place at Oxford. All instigated by a truly excellent and farthinking headmaster. I shall always look back in gratitude.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. John Herbert.
My former headmaster at Newbridge Grammar School late 60s/70s.
Thank you so much for all you did for your 1000s of pupils.
Sorry I didn't make your funeral but only just found out.
