John Hewitt was born in Burslem, Stoke on Trent on 20 August 1922. It was there that he went to school and played football at a high amateur level. On leaving school he became an apprentice sheet metal worker mainly dealing with vehicle body work.
During WW2 he joined the Fleet Airarm maintaining aircraft in Northern Ireland and Cornwall where he met his future wife Ruby. After the war they returned to Stoke and had 2 children Michael and Lynn. The family moved to Ruby's home town, Lowestoft in the early 1950s and he worked for Birds Eye for most of his working life. For a period in the 1950s he played for Lowestoft Town FC and was also keen on beach fishing.
John Hewitt was a private man with high moral values, whose main interest was his home and his family. He always remained proud of his roots in the Potteries.
Sadly John passed away after suffering a heart attack in Karlsruhe, Germany whilst attending his Grandson's, Ian, wedding.
