I am saddened to learn of the passing of Ian at such a relatively young age. I first met him on the Board of the St Peter's Quarter business improvement district which he was so committed to and I found him to be a kind, sincere and genuine man who was keen to do his best for Derby and in particular the St Peters district with which he had such an affinity. He was generous with his time and always available to talk to and to offer a measured and thoughtful view. Board Meetings with him were always a delight and he had a quiet but engaging presence and was a real gentlemen. Once you met Ian he was your friend. I send me sincere condolences to his family at this sad time.

I first met Ian after the inception of the St Peters Quarter project and we worked together since. I learned about his life and career during our conversations over the last few years and had immense respect for his professionalism and experience. I always valued his insight and his measured, gentlemanly and caring approach to both problems and opportunity. His ability to think deeply about situations and take time to ensure all parties were considered was a testament to his caring personality.
Condensing the life of such a man into a few brief sentences is something I have no right to do as I did not know him as deeply as his family and closer friends as I had the privilege for a mere few years. That should be for others as he was a friend I wanted to get to know even better.
I do know, however, that our relationship was warm, spontaneous, honest and that I am missing him deeply. Ian was taken from us too early and the world, and certainly Derby City, is colder and sadder for his loss.
My heart goes out to his family.
