Shirley MaryHODSONIt is with great sadness that we announce the death on March 22 of Shirley Mary Hodson, aged 89 years, late of Holly Bank, Hollins Lane, Accrington.

Shirley was the daughter of the late Sam and Veronica Curry, loving wife to the late John (Jack), mother to Philip, daughter-in-law Debra and grandmother to Thomas.

Educated at St Anne’s Junior School, Accrington, and continued further education at Notre Dame Grammar School for Girls, Blackburn. Shirley worked for over 30 years at Empire Stores Catalogue Company, starting as a sales representative and progressing to regional sales manager.

Throughout her busy life, she was a devoted member of St Anne’s Church, Accrington, school governor of St Anne’s and St Joseph’s and Mount Carmel Roman Catholic High School. Her commitment to St Anne’s led to the opening and continued success to-date of the Heritage Charity Shop, Accrington, in support of the church. For many years, Shirley was trustee of Maundy Relief and manager of Maundy Manna. While active in these roles, Shirley founded The Friendship Club, initially to bring together, once a month, elderly people of the local community to enjoy social gatherings, food and entertainment and occasionally trips out to the seaside, but most importantly, to meet new friends. The club continued to thrive in numbers and popularity over the years.

She treasured many happy family holidays to Cornwall and upon retirement enjoyed Tenerife. She loved going out for meals and meeting for coffee with friends and family.

Requiem Mass will be celebrated for Shirley on Tuesday, April 8 at 11am at St. Anne’s Church, Cobham Road, Accrington, followed by a cremation at Accrington Crematorium at 12.20pm.

Further enquiries: Hyndburn Funeral Services, Queens Road, Accrington.

The family have requested family flowers only, with donations to The Friendship Club.
