HORACE GREASLEYCelebrating the life of Second World War veteran Horace Greasley, who has died aged 91.His incredible experiences in a PoW camp were turned into a fascinating book, Do The Birds Still Sing in Hell?It describes his love affair with a German girl as he was held captive behind enemy lives.Horace, a private with the 2nd/5th Leicestershire Regiment, was captured, aged 21, by the Nazis during the British retreat to Dunkirk, on May 25, 1940.While he was held in one prisoner of war camp in Silesia – then part of Eastern Germany – he met and fell in love with a 17-year-old girl called Rosa Rauchbach, the daughter of a quarry director.Horace’s book told the story of the love affair and how he risked his life to brake out of the camp 200 times to engage in lustful encounters with the young woman. He always returned to the camp and never tried to make his way back home. The story only came out when the book was published a year ago.Horace, from Ibstock, near Coalville, Leics, passed away in his sleep on February 4, 2010. He was survived by his wife, Brenda.Brenda said: “Horace always said he would never be told what to do again after being in the camps so he ran his own businesses.“We decided to move over to Spain to get some sunshine and we never looked back.“We’ve had such a lovely life together. He’s got a wonderful sense of humour. I think that’s the thing I love most about him.”
