JACK DENMANTributes have been paid to Jack Denman, who died on 22 January, 2010, at the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham after a fall in which he broke his hip and wrist. He was 89.Mr Denman was a former agent who "set the standard" in Nottingham's entertainment scene for more than 40 years.Mr Denman, of Farnsfield, Nottinghamshire, used to run Denman's Casting Agency in Upper Parliament Street, Nottingham, and was renowned as one of Nottingham's leading entertainment agencies. His former secretary, Alison Hope, of Colwick, said: "People would say that going into his office was like going into a time warp. It was a typical old-fashioned variety office, and Jack was of that ilk. He was always very dapper."She added: "We used to have a riot in the office, going through old routines and making props. He was a one-off."Prior to opening the agency in the 1960s, Mr Denman himself previously had a career as an entertainer. Highlights included performing for the troops in the Second World War.After the war, he worked the renowned Moss Empire music hall circuit before opening the agency and turned his attention to finding the next big stars.Long-time friend Sally Treble, who first met Mr Denman in 1964, said: "As a newcomer to the world of professional entertainment, I had a lot to learn. As it turned out I couldn't have picked a better tutor, or agent, than Jack Denman."Jack was highly respected in the variety and television industry by employers and entertainers alike. He was a courteous, dependable and caring man, and an exemplary agent who set the standard for all other agents."Certainly, he always treated us artistes with respect and dignity, and above all with honesty. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him."Acts who went on to become household names after he took them on included comedians Dave Allen, Bill Maynard and Bernie Clifton, and actress http://www.lastingtr ibute.co. uk/tribute/perrie/25 61582 [Lynne Perrie].Friend Jimmy Willan, of the Nottingham branch of performers' union Equity, said: "I remember going into Jack's office and on the wall was a photograph of Dave Allen, who was as popular as Peter Kay in his day, with a form showing it cost £2.50 to book him at the time. Jack was so proud of that."Mr Denman was survived by his sister, Marjorie Hayes, who lives in Kirkby-in-Ashfield. Their cousin, Jennie Wardle, of Mapperley Plains, said: "He was a very special cousin to me. I was rather in awe of him when I was younger. He was such a remarkable man."http://www.this isnottingham. co.uk/homenews/Tribu tes- Nottingham-talent-ag ent/ article-1806103-deta il/ article.html [thisisnottingham.co .uk]

Thank you Jack for the time we worked together, and the number of
times you rang me at home with work, and saying its just a quick call
can you do this job for me, then he would get talking about his past
acting, and about 30 minutes later he say, l will have to go now, see you later Barrie. a few times we worked together on set.

Unfortunately I only knew Jack for just over 3 years. In that short time I got to know a small insight into his fascinating life. I could have sat and listened to his stories for many hours. He was a true gentleman who will be sadly missed in the village. He always had a warm smile and lit up the room. What a great man Jack was. Full of humour with words of wisdom I will treasure. You were much loved, will be sadly missed but never shall you be forgotten. With much love Claire
