JAMES CARTWRIGHTJames Cartwright, who died on 16 June 2007 in Iraq, had been a member of the armed forces since 2003.Lance Corporal Cartwright, of Badger Squadron, 2nd Royal Tank Regiment, was driving a Warrior Armoured Fighting Vehicle helping to securea route for a re-supply convoy when it was involved in an accident.The MoD said the vehicle slid off a bridge, overturned and landed in a canal in the early hours of the morning and his colleagues who rushed to his aid were unable to save him.Lance Corporal Cartwright - known as 'Jay' - had been deployed to Iraq in May, 2007, and joined the Irish Guards Battle Group involved in operation TELIC 10. He became the 151st British soldier to die in Iraq since March, 2003.Lance CorporalCartwright was born 1 October, 1985.At 18, he enlisted in the British Army, joining the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment as a Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank Gunner. He lived in London, and left a fiancée, Natalie.Lance CorporalCartwright had talked about leaving the Army, and had plans to serve as a fireman in Lincolnshire. He was a keen footballer, playing for his regiment, and his passion for the sport extended to him supporting Premiership team Arsenal.Described as having a “quick wit and confident manner” by his squadron leader, Major Mike Longman, he had made a steady impression during his time in the Army.
