JAMIE DOLANJamie Dolan, who died on 31 August, 2008, aged 39, was a stalwart of Motherwell FC during the 1990s when they enjoyed arguably their best fortunes since the '30s, despite financial hardship.During 10 years with the club the midfielder played over 200 games and scored five goals. Though Motherwell frequently fought relegation battles during this time, they finished third in the 1993/94 season and went one better the following year to finish as runners-up to Rangers. He left the club in 1997 and had spells at Dundee United, Dunfermline Athletic, Livingston and Partick Thistle. At the time of his death from a reported heart attack, he was coaching a junior side in Broxburn, West Lothian. In an official statement, Motherwell said: "His death, aged just thirty-nine, comes as a terrible shock and everyone at Motherwell Football Club would like to pass on our sincerest condolences to Jamie's family and friends at this sad time."James Dolan was born on 22 February, 1969, in Salsburgh, a mining village in North Lanarkshire. He worked his way through the Well's youth academy and played in the 1987 Youth Cup Final before making his first team debut. The tenacious midfielder was popular on the terraces for his hard work and commitment to the game. He missed out on a place in the Scottish Cup-winning side of 1991 but by the mid-nineties he was a key figure in Tommy McLean's side, playing alongside Paul Lambert and Billy Davies in midfield. He retained his place when Alex McLeish took the helm of the club in 1994, but three years later McLeish was forced to lose him as part of a swap deal to acquire Owen Coyle from Dundee United. He established himself in the side at Tannadice Park but once again missed out on a cup final as United faced Celtic in the Scottish League Cup.When he retired in 2002 after a season with Partick Thistle, he had amassed more than 300 league games. He became manager of Broxburn Athletic in 2004 and continued his links with Motherwell, participating in the former player's club and charity events.
