JOE LIVINGSTONEJoe Livingstone, who passed away on 2 August, 2009, aged 67, was a footballer for Middlesbrough, Carlisle and Hartlepools. At Boro he was understudy to legendary centre-forward Brian Clough. Shortly after his 18th birthday, Joe replaced the injured Clough for the opening two games of the 1960/61 season without having even appeared for the club's reserves. He went on to score seven goals in 22 games following Clough’s transfer to Sunderland. He moved on to Carlisle in November 1962, scoring an impressive 41 goals in 80 leagues games, before a short spell under Clough's management at Hartlepools United. After retiring from football he ran the Park End Hotel pub in Middlesbrough with his wife Elaine.Former Boro and England forward Alan Peacock, who played alongside Joe at Ayresome Park, said: "It's very sad news and a shock because I knew he was ill but was hoping to go and see him."Joe was a big, strong lad with a great left foot. Although I was a bit older than he was, we got on well together as two local lads and played alongside one another on several occasions."Former Boro captain Gordon Jones visited Joe with ex-Boro team-mate Eric McMordie just a few days before Joe's passing.Jones said: "It was such a shock to hear Joe had died so quickly after our visit. Joe, Eric and I talked about old times and had a really good laugh."I remember they threw Joe into the first team because Cloughie was in dispute with the club. While Brian was the sort of player who did all his work in the box but wouldn't run around for you, Joe was just the opposite, he would work for the team."He was a big strong strapping centre-forward, a smashing lad and a real character. He was proud to have played for the Boro."Joe and Elaine had five sons, 16 grandchildren and one great grandson.
