JOHN AXONTelevision actor John Axon died on 25 October, 2008, from a suspected heart attack near his home in Stockport aged just 48.He was best known for his leading role in the ITV series The Royal. He played Nigel Harper - a hapless administrator at the eponymous hospital in the Heartbeat spin-off - between 2003 and 2005.During an acting career which began in the early 1990s, he had also appeared in series such as Peak Practice, Emmerdale, Casualty, The Bill, Life on Mars and Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights.Mr Axon originally worked as a graphic artist before becoming an actor. He had also appeared on the stage in Manchester. His agent Tim Scott paid tribute to him, saying: "Aside from being really talented, he was a really funny, jovial man who always had a smile on his face. No-one ever had a bad word to say about him."A spokesman for the Channel 4 series Shameless, for which John had been due to start filming at the time of his death, said: "It is a tragic loss for the industry to lose such a fine actor as John and all of us at Shameless are so sad that we did not have the opportunity to continue to work with him, before his untimely death. He had been a delight to work with during rehearsals with the cast and had been due to start filming this week on the series in Manchester."John's grandfather, for whom he was named, was the modern folk hero John Axon who was awarded the George Cross for his heroics in trying to stop a runaway train in 1957, bravery which cost him his life.

We worked together only twice, once in the opening show at The West Yorkshire Playhouse (Wild Oats) and about 15 years later on New Street Law for the BBC. An unforgettable man, John was, and we got on like a house on fire - funny, quiet, dry and droll, he made me laugh a great deal and when we met again those 15 years later we just carried on where we left off. I'm shocked and saddened to read of his death. Far, far too young for such a lovely and talented man.

I'm really very sorry to hear John has gone. He was my lodger in Leeds in 1990 when he was in a play at West Yorkshire Playhouse and we became good mates. We kept in touch sporadically over the occasional pint and the odd letter, which always made me laugh out loud. He was a natural comic and the best possible company in the pub.
Cheers John.

John, growing up with you was an experience, I hope you got from me as much as I got from you ! Although the last 4 years we lived across the world from each other those texts kept me laughing.
As they say over here, 'you are a true mate' I still find it difficult thinking that you are no longer around in body, but at least you can say Hi to Bobtail for me ( private joke guys ).
To me you were and always will be John, no matter who you were playing, My trips back to the UK won't be quite the same anymore, mainly because I know i'll be waking up without the obligitory hangover after a night in 'the vic' with the gang, hope your smiling Mr Moore !
There isn't much more to say apart from you never paid me back that 30 quid you b*****d !
Thanks for everything John, the world is a sadder place now,
Steve xx

John, we knew each other for about 10 years or so and shared a love of the theatre. You always supported me in my ventures and came to see as many shows as you could. I saw you a few weeks ago when you were just as funny and animated as ever - the acting world has lost a true star. You always stayed true to your roots. The world is now a sadder place without you.
