JOHN BENTLEYThe dashing British actor John Bentley died on 13 August, 2009.During the 1950s he was known for playing crime and adventure heroes, such as Philip Lombard in a 1949 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, the genteel detective Paul Temple in three films and Chief Insp. Paul Derek in the television series African Patrol (1958-59).He had leading roles in a dozen films and appeared on screen with the likes of Dirk Bogarde, John Mills and Errol Flynn. He also spent a spell working in LA.But he was perhaps best remembered as Hugh Mortimer, the handsome husband of motel owner Meg Richardson (played by Noele Gordon) – their onscreen marriage in 1975 attracted 18 million viewers and was described as the ‘wedding of the decade’.Despite being a housewives’ favourite, Mr Bentley’s character was killed off in 1977 in an outlandish plot involving international terrorists. He was from Sparkhill in Birmingham and the Birmingham Mail reported that he had died at the age of 92. He spent his retirement in Petworth, Surrey.Maria Brabiner of the Crossroads Appreciation Society said: “When I found out that he had died I was gutted.“He has always been my favourite actor and always will be. He was not only good-looking but he had a lovely voice, was smooth, sophisticated and charming.”

I had the pleasure of working with John in a production of Equus at Swansea Grand Theatre, in which he took the demanding role of Dysart, the psychiatrist. He was a consummate professional but still found time to visit a school to talk to their arts club about his career. He took great pleasure in talking to these young people, who left the meeting with a wonderful insight into the world of film, TV and stage. He encouraged the younger members of the cast and was always ready to give advice or help without patronising or appearing superior. He was certainly an inspiration to me and I treasure my memories of him. Rest in Peace John, you are greatly missed.

I was so shocked to hear of John,s passing. I used to go and watch him in his plays at the connaught theatre in Worthing Sussex. And go and meet him afterwards in the bar. There were a few times that I would turn up at his home in Petworth and he would always ask me in for a chat. He was a gracious, man and a great Actor. I shall miss him greatly. Karen Ellis

I'm so sad to hear this news. Crossroads was my favourite programme for years despite all the fun people used to poke at it. John Bentley was a very good actor with a charismatic screen presence and he and Noele Gordon made a great couple.

Such a shame that the programme was ruined in later years. But this news - sad though it is - has brought back many happy memories of the great characters like Meg, Hugh, Jill and Sandy, Amy Turtle and Mr Lovejoy.

It's wonderful to hear that Mr Bentley lived to such a good age. My condolences to his family and all who knew him.
