JOHNNY DIXONJohnny Dixon, who died on 20 January, 2009, aged 85, was an Aston Villa stalwart who lifted the FA Cup as captain in 1957.In 17 years at Villa Park, the striker scored 144 goals in 430 appearances.The cup win was the highlight of his career and he also led them to the Second Division Championship in 1960 following a shock relegation the previous year.Johnny was born on 10 December, 1923, Newcastle upon Tyne. He began his career with County Durham side Spennymoor United before signing for Villa in 1945.He was a one-time recipient of the supporters' 'Terrace Trophy' award in 1959. He retired in 1961 and scored in his final game.After retiring he coached the Aston Villa youth team for six years and continued to play for the Villa Old Stars team.He spent the rest of his working life as an ironmonger in the West Midlands.He died in a care home in Tamworth, Staffordshire, and was survived by his wife Brenda, son Andrew, daughter Helen and three grandchildren.Villa spokesman Steve Tudgay said: "Johnny Dixon's association with Aston Villa spanned over 20 years and culminated in him leading the club to FA Cup glory in 1957."His impact and legacy will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with Johnny's family and close friends."Another Villa legend, Vic Crowe, who played with Johnny Dixon, died the following day.
