WilliamJUCKES(Bill) Born 25/6/1949. Died 31/3/2018 The Fishermen's Farewell Roaring down Newlyn Hill he comes Flying helmet and goggles, red hair streaming. Then swaggers up the jetty, young again. They're waiting for him, the fishermen Kings of the quay Lords of the sea All gone now. The skipper raises his arm Yellow waterproof, cuff turned back, 'Come on, Bill, we've got a tide to catch.' And in he jumps, no money in his pocket But his eyes still full of last night's fun. The boat slips away, silent now, Over the glassy waters, out to the horizon And off the edge of the world. ---------------------------------------------- For Bill Juckes, fisherman, miner, farmer, woodsman, chef, raconteur and loyal friend. A big man with a generous heart. And for all the fishermen of the golden years of the 70's who are no longer with us. The world is a colder place now.
