KATRINA JACKSA talented graduate, http://www. thisisgloucestershir e.co.uk/ news/GPs-daughter-di es-Peru- expedition/article-2 259547- detail/article.html [Katrina Jacks], from Tidenham, Gwent, died while trekking in Peru on 16 May, 2010.Katrina, who was 23, collapsed after suffering from altitude sickness while hiking near Lake Titicaca – the highest navigable lake in the world.A statement from her family said she had died from natural causes associated with the acute effects of high altitude.Her parents, GPs Alastair and Susanna Jacks, who are partners at Tutshill Surgery, paid tribute to their daughter saying: "Katrina will be very sadly missed by her family, boyfriend Jon and all her many friends."Her loss will be immeasurable."Katrin a, who was also survived by brother Will, and sister Rosie, had been making the climb up to the lake, which is 12,530 ft above sea level, during a gap year after university.Earlier in her trip she had walked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.She had also been working in an orphanage in Ecuador after achieving a first-class honours degree in chemical engineering from Imperial College, London.She had been due to start a job with an engineering consultancy after her gap year.A former pupil of Tutshill CofE Primary School and Monmouth Haberdashers School for Girls, Katrina had represented Great Britain at Rowing and won a silver medal for Wales at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.Her family said: "She was extremely bright and gained straight As at both GCSE and A-level. She was a proficient needlewoman and loved baking, especially for her friends."Her huge contribution helped build the strong foundations of rowing at the school today and will be considered a lasting legacy."
