KEN MACLEODThe medical profession united to pay tribute to an "inspirational" physician and educator, who died suddenly at the age of 47.Dr Ken MacLeod, director of clinical studies at the Peninsular Medical School, died playing tennis. The associate dean leading the Exeter locality had a rare and recently diagnosed heart muscle disease.Professor Sir John Tooke, of the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, said the institution had lost an "inspirational leader and educator, and a doctor who was the perfect role model for our students".He added: "Ken MacLeod was a superb physician who used his understanding of medicine and people to craft a fantastic learning experience for the doctors of tomorrow."“At a personal level, his selflessness and commitment to patients, students and colleagues was unparalleled. He will be very sorely missed.”Dr MacLeod qualified in Aberdeen and joined the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust as a senior registrar in 1995.He was appointed as consultant physician in general medicine and endocrinology in 1997, with clinical interests in general internal medicine, diabetes and endocrinology. He was committed to ensuring students attained the highest possible professional standards, and gained a good grounding in science and clinical reasoning.Dr MacLeod also helped facilitate a great deal of diabetes research. In 2008 he was co-author of a research paper which identified that diabetes sufferers taking insulin do not pose an increased risk to road safety.Angela Pedder, chief executive of the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, said Dr MacLeod made a “huge contribution” to the college. She said: “He combined the best of clinical and academic medicine, and the young doctors for whom he was academic or clinical supervisor derived enormous benefit from contact with Ken who put his teaching into practice in all aspects of his work.”Professor Steve Smith, vice chancellor of the University of Exeter, said: “Ken made huge contributions to both the development of medical education and to clinical practice in the South West.“As well as being a consummate professional and an outstanding example of a modern doctor, he was held in the deepest esteem and warmth by all those who knew him.“His tragic death has affected us all profoundly, and we will miss him greatly.”http://www. thisisexeter.co.uk/ news/Tributes-Exeter -doctor/ article-1174522-deta il/ article.html [thisisexeter]

To the very best friend you could ask for, very funny and warm and kind, very very loved and missed over 15 years and I wish you were here every day just to talk to and make me laugh and the best youth leader you could ask for

Thank you Ken for being such a caring doctor. Remembering you as I'm now 47 years of age and still alive because I still take your advice on my medicine even now. See you again one day. God bless

Dr. Kenneth Macleod was an inspiring Doctor, a great Teacher, above all a good Human. When I was a Junior doctor tying to find my feet, Dr.Macleod strongly supported me and adviced and guided thru the hardships. Except for his support during my stay in Exeter, I would not have succeeded in this Profession. Miss you Sir. Its a great loss to the Society and is irreplaceable and I feel for some of his patients who would be left in vaccum without his guidance in fighting against Diabetes. My thoughts are with his Family especially with his sons who will be missing this Legend, a role model. Still he lives in our hearts and I can not come to the terms that I can not see him next time when I come to RD&E, my heart beleives that I will definitely meet you at some point in life. See you sir. Much loved, sadly missed, never forgotten. Jan*

Dr Kenneth Macleod was one of those rare people that enhance lives and I feel priveliged to have been a patient of this special person
One of my enduring memories of this exceptional man will be of him smiling as he strode down the corridor of his welcoming Thursday clinic, pieces of paper in hand, dispensing warm hellos and nice to see yous to his patients.
A lovely human being has passed too soon.
Rest in peace, dearest Dr Macleod.
