KENT HENRYKent Henry, who died on 18 March, 2009, aged 60, was an American guitarist who played with Blues Image and Steppenwolf. With the former he added the smooth guitar solos to their biggest hit, Ride Captain Ride, which became a standard of blues rock, making the USTop Fivein the summer of 1970.It was a strange twist of fate as Henry had originally been drafted in to replace band leader Mike Pinera who was bound for Iron Butterfly, though both guitarists played on the single before Pinera eventually departed.Henry recorded the album Red White & Blues Image (1970) with the group before they went their separate ways, Henry joining the line-up of psychedelic rock outfit Steppenwolf, best known for their 1967 hit Born to be Wild.He played lead guitar on their studo album For Ladies Only (1971) and then on the ‘farewell’ tour of that year. He continued to work with frontman John Kay on his first two solo albums, but did not work with Steppenwolf when they reformed in 1974 after a fall-out with the drummer. After that he played with a few minor outfits and then worked as a technician at a major record store in Portland, Oregon.Patti J Hill, who cared for the musician at her home in Oregon, described him as an easy going andhumble man, adding that he once gave a gold record away because he did not want to look like he was bragging.
