Rest now, dear Eddie
DAD
As we said ‘farewell’ and you’re laid to rest.
A missed opportunity to highlight the best.
Sadly, an eulogy missing that day,
No effort. Disappointing, we have to say.
Memories last forever and always in our heart.
Perhaps reminisce about our cruises, as a simple start.
Or stories of your army days in Egyptian haze and heat.
Or the fact you loved yer tatties, veg and meat.
Where was the story of your life?
No talk of childhood tomfoolery, work history,
hobbies or of Betty, your wife.
But alas all was not lost as the Kerr family gather.
Over a cuppa, photos and a right guid blether.
It started on the trams where you met my mum.
Betty became your life; your number one.
The little boy you bounced upon your knee,
You chose to keep, I’m forever grateful, you see.
I wanted for nothing; you showed true grit
Providing for our family and buying my first drum kit.
Your love for Celtic was second to none.
Many memories of you cheering them on when they won.
Janet talks fondly of the things she did for you.
Whether cooking, cleaning, decorating,
gardening, to name a few.
She tells the tale of your birthday treat!
No, not the foot spa to pamper your feet.
It was when she took you out into the cold,
To ride the trishaws; so brave and bold.
You never learned to ride a bike.
So, the next best thing was this adventurous hike.
When mum passed away you were vulnerable and grieving
But untruths fed to you daily were grossly deceiving.
My apparent crime of ‘absence’ falls into the abyss,
Compared to the brainwashing against
me, the truth was amiss!
We were robbed; robbed of our time together,
As your dependence on others, you couldn’t sever
The untruths that were unfounded and unjust,
Not upsetting the apple cart - but who to trust!
Dad, I’m grateful that we made peace in the end.
Understanding the message, you wanted to send.
You holding my hand tight for hours and hours
Our relationship mended, despite disapproving glowers.
Rest now ‘my’ Dad
Janet Kerr
