DorisKIRBYMRS Doris Kirby nee Masterman, of Corbridge Court, Clitheroe, formerly of Green Haworth, Accrington, died on Sunday, March 15 peacefully at her daughter's home in Clitheroe, aged 90. Born and raised in Church, she worked as inspector on munitions at Great Harwood from age 14, then Co-op Laundry, West End, Oswaldtwistle from the age of 16 in the wages department. She married Alan Kirby and continued to work at the Co-op Laundry whilst also helping Alan to start in business as Kirby's Funeral Service (later known as Kirby & Hughes Funeral Service), Market Street, Church. She left the laundry to help Alan and started a flower shop attached to the business in Market Street and then another flower shop on Blackburn Road, Accrington - 'D Kirby - Florist'. Both Doris and Alan were very well known and respected in Hyndburn and they continued with the funeral business, which later relocated to Blackburn Road, Accrington, until Alan retired in 1988. She was well-known in local Masonic and Rotarian circles and attended Church Kirk in Church for many years. She leaves a daughter Samantha, son-in-law John, grandchildren Elisabeth and Alexander, and a dearly loved friend Tom. A service took place at Accrington Crematorium on Monday, March 30, at 2.20pm.
