Dennis CharlesLARGEDied peacefully in hospital after a short illness on 4th January 2025 surrounded by his close and loving family, aged 88 years. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. His funeral will be at St. Gabriel's Church, Alsager, ST7 2DE, at 11:30am on 5th February. In his 62-year marriage with his beloved wife Kathleen, they had two children Geraldine and Susan; four grandchildren Samantha, Adam, Kimberley and James, and one great grandson Thomas, with all of whom he loved to spend time.
Dennis was born in Birkenhead, attending Overchurch and Bidston Avenue primary schools and Park High School, where he was in the school rugby and swimming teams. After school he did tennis, swimming, bowls and golf. His National Service in 1959 was in the RAF, from where he was discharged on medical grounds.
He started work as an apprentice draftsman with English Electric in Liverpool, working his way up to Fusegear Sales. As he had set his sights on the design office he studied electrical engineering at at Birkenhead Technical College (night school), followed by Liverpool Byron Street Technical College (day release), following which he worked as Contracts Engineer there, then transferring to a similar role in English Electric Computers in Kidsgrove, Staffordshire. This later became ICL (International Computers Limited), where he was Computer Environmental Engineer, Environmental Consultant and Environmental Technical Support Manager, travelling the world to build and support computer rooms when these were the size of football pitches and needed complete air conditioning. He retired in 1996.
His hobbies included photography (still/cine/video), ballroom dancing, home computing and choral singing as a tenor with Crewe Male Voice choir.
Dennis was also a keen member of the Catenian Association, an international social organisation for Catholic men, for 33 years, where he held office as Registrar (1992-3), Secretary (1993-9), President (2001-2), Provincial Councillor (2002-6) and Provincial President (2006-7).
