BryanLEWISBryan Lewis May 25, 1938 - April 19, 2025 Leicester, England It is with love and sadness that we announce the passing of James Bryan Lewis, known to all as Bryan, who died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 86. Bryan was born at home on Paget Road, off Tudor Road in Leicester, on May 25, 1938. He was the first son of Sydney Lewis, a hardworking, local baker from Stoke-on-Trent, and Evelyn Emily Lewis (née Travis) from Matlock, Derbyshire. His younger brother, David Terrence Lewis ("Terry"), followed, completing their close-knit family. From an early age, Bryan displayed charm, talent, and humour. Bryan, his brother Terry, and best friend Geoff Garner were a lively trio, filling the neighbourhood with energy Amazingly, Bryan and Geoff remained close friends for over 80 years-a testament to Bryan's loyalty and kindness. During his childhood, Bryan spent many happy summers on his grandparents, Percy and Clara's, farm in Matlock, where he walked the cows home in the evening-a simple joy that stayed with him his whole life. He attended Fosse School and was a strikingly handsome and musically inclined young man. Bryan could play the piano from memory, loved to dance, and had a deep appreciation for opera. He later served with pride in the Coldstream Guards-a chapter that shaped his character with discipline and dignity. After his service, Bryan worked briefly at Lewis's Department Store before beginning a successful career in the motor industry. He eventually founded Chevron Motors on Humberstone Road, which he owned and operated with his beautiful Italian wife, Diana. Together they built a long-lasting, successful business. Always well-dressed and elegant, Bryan shared a special bond with Diana, a true fashionista-together they were known for their style and grace. Her flair and spirit complemented his own. Together they raised three children: Belinda, Nick, and Jamie. Bryan was immensely proud of his family- which grew to include seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him joy. Among his most treasured memories were the years when Nick worked alongside him at Chevron Motors-days filled with camaraderie, shared purpose, and much laughter. Bryan and Diana made many trips to the United States to visit Belinda and her family, where Bryan was continually uplifted by the warm, open spirit of the American people. He encouraged Belinda to follow her passion for travel, and took immense pride in watching her build a successful career doing what she loved. Bryan shared his love of tennis and squash with Jamie, whom he taught and encouraged from a young age. He was Jamie's biggest fan, proud of his tenacity, natural athleticism, and competitive spirit, and he loved nothing more than watching him on court. Bryan was a talented squash and tennis player himself, playing tennis well into his 80s at the Leicestershire Lawn Tennis Club, with his longtime doubles partner, Adrian Levy. Bryan was admired for his energy and sportsmanship. He loved to travel (though not to fly!) and often returned to Trieste, Italy, with Diana. Animals, especially dogs, adored Bryan, and he shared his life with many beloved canine companions. Bryan lived a full and blessed life. A lifelong reader, Bryan had a deep love of books and newspapers, which were a constant presence in his daily life. In his later years, he was lovingly cared for by Diana, his children, and devoted carers. He continued to laugh, enjoy a hearty spaghetti Bolognese with red pepper flakes, plenty of dark chocolate, a nice cup of tea, and his favourite music from Pavarotti, Queen, and Abba. Leicester has lost one of its own in Bryan Lewis, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to Alzheimer's Research UK via the tribute page: "Honouring the Life and Legacy of Bryan Lewis" www.justgiving.com/page/bryanlewis7 Funeral-Friday, May 23, 11AM at St Mary's Church, Ashby Folville, Melton Mowbray LE14 2TE. A wake will follow at the Carington Arms. All who knew Bryan, including past customers and friends, are warmly welcome to attend. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the music, laughter, and love he gave so freely.
