Letter from John Milward - Guild of Cordwainers

Dear Katy,
Thank you so much for sending me your very thoughtful and helpful letter dated 16th May.
It was with mixed feelings that I received the news of your dear Dad’s homecall. Your Mother had told be some time ago that Robert was very unwell with Alzheimer’s disease and so, whilst sad to hear of his passing yet how wonderful to be able to rejoice that he is now home with his Lord whom he served with such love and devotion over many, many years.
May I express to you and all the Lucas family my deepest sympathy at the loss of someone so dear to you all.
It was through the Guild of Cordwainers that I came to know your Dad and to treasure a close relationship with such a special man. Robert was a first class Secretary of the Guild, filling the post with care and enthusiasm. However his ministry to Guild members and to so many others was very special in a wider way- as you know, he frequently sent out messages of Christian encouragement, often accompanied with a leather bookmark with a text etc inscribed on it. He would share experiences of his faith and his Christmas letter would include news of his family who all meant so much to him. I came to realise what a remarkable service he gave to his customers, often going to great lengths to meet individual needs. He witnessed to his Saviour so powerfully with his life as well as with his speech and his writings.
I know that as a very close family you remember your dear Dad with huge thanksgiving to God. May I and so many others be associated with this spirit of praise. We recall a beloved friend and brother.
Please give my warmest greetings to your dear Mum. I am very sorry to learn that she is not well.
I will be remembering you all specially on Friday.
Yours very sincerely,
John

Tribute from Juhani & Astrid Berg, UNIDO

Dear Katy,

Thank you for letting me know that Robert has passed away. You are quite right that your father was an amazing man and a great personality. I had the pleasue and priviledge to be associated with him through UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Projects). We first met in Hungay in 1976 when he was a team member of the footwear development project in Minosegi Chipoyar in Budapest. I was at the time manager of this project and so fortunate to have such a capable, likable and hard workng shoe technologist in our team. He contributet a lot to the hungarian footwear development at that time.

I had also the pleasure to work with Robert in the Saint Kitts project where he made a great job as usual. Again it was so good to have such a capable technologist in our project staff who could pass on his knowledge to the pepole we had mandate to assist. He really left his marks in all the assistant projects he was involved with. He was not only a superb technologist but his greatest asset was that he was capable to work with all kinds of people and pass on his knowledge with a big smile on his face making people feel easy and relaxed in that process. In other worlds he was really a great teacher.

I am regretably not able to attend the furneral service but we will send hereby our deepest condolences to you and the rest of the family. May he rest in peace after his very worthwile and special visit on our Mother Earth.

Juhani & Astrid Berg

Tribute from Geoff & Margaret Mackinson

Both my wife and I have very fond memories of the time that we were privileged to know Bob.

I worked at Hinckley College while Robert was Head of the Boot, Shoe and Leather department.

He was always busy immersing himself into his work coming up with a continual stream of new ideas to enable the department to survive against a background of afailing National trend in the Boot & Shoe industry. He was so successful that the department actually increased in size albeit as a Department of Leathercraft.

Everyone liked Bob, staff and students alike. The staff liked and respected him for his honest determined hard work and ever cheerful optimistic manner. He was always prepared to fight his corner whenever harsh decisions were made by the college management. The students liked him for his enthusiastic and friendly approach, always prepared to go the extra mile to resolve any problems. What was there not to like, as a gifted teacher he ticked all the boxes.
