ErnestLUKETo mark six months since our lovely Dad passed away... Ernest Charles Elford Luke 1931-2021 Ernest Luke, more commonly known as Ernie, was born on 5th October 1931 in Truro. He was from a large family, three sisters, Betty, Jean and Stella and two brothers, Tony and Barry. Ernie moved with his family to Redruth at an early age, and he resided in the district for the rest of his life. At the age of 14, Ernie started work with a local auctioneer, but at the age of 18, he was one of the last cohort of young men who were required to complete National Service, in his case with the Royal Air Force. At the end of his National Service, he was unable to return to his original employer, but arrangements had been made, for him to start as a clerk’s position at the then Spears Bros bacon factory in the centre of Redruth. The young Ernie Luke’s ability was quickly recognised and at the age of 27 he became manager of the factory, a position he held until his retirement aged 60. When the owners of the business took the decision to cease trading, Ernie took a key role in forming a farmer’s co-operative, an almost unheard of business model in those days, securing the factory’s future for many years. Ernie Luke Married Avis Vivian from Falmouth in 1954. Avis and Ernie were married for over 50 years had two children, Jenny and Steve, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Unfortunately Avis suffered an major stroke in her mid-fifties and Ernie cared for her for 25 years until her death in 2010. Outside of work and family life, Ernie had a number of interests including his lifetime passion of supporting Manchester United. Ernie Luke passed away peacefully at Helston Community Hospital on the 8th February 2021. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that offered their support and sympathies during this difficult time. Remembering you with love Dad, Jenny and Steve.
