Alan JamesMACFARLANEPassed away peacefully after a short illness on 15th November 2021 at Derriford Hospital, aged 95 years. Husband of Barbara Macfarlane, dad of Andrew, Helen and David, father-in-law of Lynne, Ian and Janni, grandad of 9 children and great grandad of 8 children. We are heartbroken to announce the death of Alan James Macfarlane - beloved husband, dad, grandad and great-grandad. A proud and wonderful family man who lived life to the full, he was still caravanning and playing golf into his nineties. He engaged freely and cared about everyone and had a knack for creating environments to bring out the best in people, allowing them to realise their full potential. This was the common theme of the many farewell wishes he received when he retired as Managing Director of Farley Heath Products in 1986. Not one to take things easy, he then devoted his energies (as Governor and the Chairman) to transitioning Plymouth Polytechnic to the University it is today, and was admitted as an Honorary Doctor of Science in 1995. He was also a Plymouth Theatre Royal Director, an avid cruciverbalist; a playing vets and latterly social member of Yelverton Golf Club, and an enthusiastic member of Roborough Rotary Club, Paul Harris Fellow - often dressed as Santa at Christmas, and towing the sleigh aged 92. He died at 95, having lived life to the full, active to the very end, admired, respected and much loved. Funeral service will be held at Weston Mill Crematorium on Friday 3rd December 2021 at 2.00pm, followed by a social gathering at Yelverton Golf Club.
