MATTHEW SZTUMPFMusic manager Matthew Sztumpf, who died on 21 March, 2010 was best known for spells overseeing the careers of Madness and The Smiths.
He helped organise the legendary 2 Tone tours of the late 1970s, launching the career of Madness and their fellow ska revivalists.
Sztumpf managed The Smiths twice, first briefly in 1985 and then again the following year, renegotiating their contract with Rough Trade prior to the release of seminal album The Queen Is Dead.
Both times the caprices of lead singer Morrissey saw his services summarily dispensed with after a few weeks.
He went on to manage ’80s pop act Swing Out Sister and more recently indie pop band Scouting for Girls, as well as running tours and events for Sony.
Mark Knopfler manager Paul Crockford said: “'Matt was one of the good guys in the business. He did the best for his acts with honesty, dignity and most importantly, a sense of humour. He will be sorely missed.”
Chrysalis chief executive Jeremy Lascelles said: “Matthew was a real straight-up, good bloke, with no edge or side to him. He was a genuinely nice guy, and there are not enough of those around. I’m very, very sad that he is no longer with us.”

It's the 3rd of January 2011 and I've only just discovered that Matt is no longer with us. I am thoroughly ashamed of myself. Matt was a good friend who I'd lost touch with over the years. Id known him since he was a booking agent, fresh out of college and we always gone on really well, to the extent that he even managed me for a while back in the seventies. We had a lot of Sunday lunches together and then went off to play snooker while the ladies did what they do... Matt, although I hadn't seen you for a while, I knew that all I had todo was pick up the phone and your calm, friendly voice would be at the other end of the line. I'll miss you.

Matthew was my half brother , looked after me whilst at boarding school with Mum and dad living abroad, I have fond memories of drives down from the west country with him at exeats and passing the cows on the roof of a dairy company on the A4.
Later as an adult had the pleasure of seeing couple of bands with him, The Bangles etc.
Great fun guy he was.I admired his relaxed ways, and althouygh not having seen him much as an adult save a couple of chinese dinners, I miss knowing he is around. My heart goes out to all of you who knew him, friends, and family.

There are some very nice tributes to Mathew through the music business which shows what he was, a truly good man. I knew him through our local pub the Row Barge in Henley-on-Thames. When our pub closed he single handedly reopened the pub to the delight of the regulars and then after chrismas he handed the pub to the new owner in very fine shape. He was a true Gentlemen and we will all miss him and I truly feel for his his family. God Bless you Marcus

What a fantastic man and what a terrible loss, far too young, really hard to believe. One of life's gentlemen with a twinkly eye and a lovely smile. I knew Matt a long time ago when he was an Agent, starting at Bron (I think) and breaking out from the Agency business into Management of acts like Madness and SOS and even my little bro' Simon Perry for a while. His beautiful daughter Hannah was born within a few weeks of my daughter Amy and I have photographs of them playing together in my garden - my thoughts go out to her now, presumably a bit taller than she was when I last saw her! Funnily enough just last weekend I pulled a children's book out of my shelves to read to my 3-year old granddaughter and spotted Matt's handwriting in the flyleaf, a gift from Matt, Hannah and Hilary to Amy for her christening. It's a gentle book with dry humour, just as I remember Matt. The book is called 'Could be Worse' - well now I wonder if it could.

Ah, one of many to have the honour of being sacked by Morrissey! - not once but twice!

At least he contributed to the Smiths story. RIP.
