We first met Bob in 1997 at the BCN Clean Up in Walsall. He brought his tug Governor to help pull the full open boats full of rubbish pulled out of the canal. Over the years from then we developed a good friendship. His involvement in the BCN Society, especially his photos and write ups in the Society’s journal Boundary Post linked us even more in the 12 years that I was editor. Bob’s photography was something special and he will be remembered for his many lovely canal images. These are now in the possession of the Society. We remember his stories of life in Gas Street Basin while living in the canal side building in Gas Street in what is now the Tap & Spile. His frequent quote was “Come & have a drink in my bedroom” – which of course was now a room in the pub! Bob was always smartly dressed and took pride in his appearance. On the first occasion he visited our home he looked around the garden & said “I like your garden as it has my flower growing in it – “Herb Robert”. Another memory of Bob was his personally made Christmas Cards, always something different involving a photograph. The one I remember most was the “Fairy” on top of the Christmas tree – a bottle of Fairy Liquid! For all sorts of reasons we will remember Bob with much affection. R.I.P. Bob. A lovely and gentle man and a great photographer. Memories of his teetering atop a high step ladder at a CCT Annual General Meeting to get a great photo!!
He will be very much missed.
