Sincere condolences to Al’s Family .Happy memories of playing football at New Lodge with Al and Garry Leadbeater and then at St Edwin’s. Even then Al was head and shoulders better than any one of our age

Deeply saddened To hear of the passing of Alan Melling at the comparitively young age of 67.I first knew Alan as a student teacher from Loughborough College when he was assigned to King Richard lll Comprehensive School on teaching practice. He later was appointed on a permanent post , teaching English and PE. He was immediately popular with both students and staff. I will always recall his broad Yorkshire accent , as a Barnsley lad, with his infectious smile and deep raucous laugh. He excelled as an all-round sportsman, his prowess on the football field and as a cricketer, formidable with bat and ball.
Prior commitments forbid my attendance in person at his funeral, but I will be present in admiration and deep personal friendship.

So sad to hear of Al’s passing. Wonderful early school days together at St Edwin’s. A champion in sports…and as a friend. Sorry we lost touch over the years and miles, but always remembered. RIP my old mate!

Where do I start . We were friends for almost 60 years! When we hadn’t seen each other for a while and bumped into each other again it was always so easy to get straight back into the swing . Alan was the most humble person, even though he was super talented , he was just one of the lads . He was and will always be my best mate . Condolences to all the family !
