MICHAEL RENNIEOn August 25th, 1909, in Idle, Bradford, a son born to Edith and Alexander Rennie. They named him Eric Alexander. They could never have known their son would grow up to be the handsome actor Michael Rennie. After a long career he passed away while visiting his mother in Harrogate and is laid to rest in Harlow Hill Churchyard. Wherever I go, whatever I do, my day begins and ends with you. Love you always, forget you never, Val xxx

Michael Rennie, in his TV role of Harry Lime, was far and away the strongest influence on me when I was 15, fatherless, and therefore searching for someone I could respect and try to emulate. Never mind that I was physically utterly unlike him - the important thing was his impressive style, and his ability to outwit upstarts and bullies, and put them firmly in their place (in this he was like Superman). The relationship and contrast his Harry Lime character had with his side-kick, Brad, was a delight to watch too (could that name have been chosen because of Rennie's connection with Bradford, one wonders).

Surely it is high time that the BBC reshowed the old episodes of 'The Third Man', even if they were only to be transmitted in the dead of night.

Now I will catch a train to Harrogate and pay my first ever visit to his grave. Wish me luck.

I have only just found out that Michael Rennie was laid to rest in Harlow hill churchyard so as I was visiting Harrogate last weekend I called in to visit his grave. Forty years since he passed away , such a shame, I had a lot of respect for this British actor and wished I had met him? I noticed the flowers and nice card from Val at the grave! Eddie!
