I can’t quite believe that John is no longer with us. I’ve spent the past couple of weeks remembering the great times we shared since we first met at a spice Halloween party 18 years ago. John was fun, intelligent kind and generous. Knowing my love of peas he once gave me a book about the goodness of peas written by John Midgley! I am very much going to miss popping round for coffee with you, when I’m up visiting Holmfirth. Goodbye my friend. Love Fran xx

I met John just over a year ago when I became his MSt Supervisor, but after several conversations I felt like I'd known him much longer. Possibly because our shared geology background meant we knew lots of people in common, but most likely because he was the sort of person I always delighted in having great conversations with in pubs when I get back north! John was a real character, funny and warm, and a very intelligent scholar - I always left our conversations learning something important, and having had a laugh. I am so sad at his passing, and I know he still had much to contribute to the academic world and beyond. He will be very much missed.

I honestly can’t quite comprehend that John is no longer with us. I hadn’t seen him for some time but I’d known him over 20 years and thought of him as a true friend, a very very clever super intelligent man and ridiculously funny too! I have many good memories but some of my fave include him being at my 40th party on the Isle of Arran and the spice 25th anniversary ball. I’ll miss you John… there’ll never be another you! :( Nomes xxx

I was talking to John only last autumn as part of his master's degree work at Univ. Cambridge. As usual he was super engaged, proactive and 'thinking big' about climate and the energy transition. So, it was a big shock to hear that he had suddenly left us.

I have known John for 15 years now - mainly as a colleague, via the In Salah project in Algeria, where we both worked in various capacities as the project evolved. John also visited our team at Equinor in Norway several times over that period.

It is hard to sum him up - he was hugely practical and at the same time a visionary and a great team player. A good memory for me is when we were discussing some geological well data (part of my job) and trying to resolve some confusing things with the well logs. 'Yes, well, I was there when they drilled that well', chimes John, "and this is what happened..." Wow - I responded, 'you actually drilled these wells!' As many others will confirm, he was a power-house of knowledge gained by practical experience in field operations and hard work. A really great guy to work with.

He will be sorely missed as a 'larger than life' character who also made a 'big footprint' in the field of Carbon Capture and Storage.

I will really miss him. My condolences to all the family.

Your sincerely
Phil Ringrose, Trondheim, Norway
