MONICA MAUGHANAustralian actress Monica Maughan died in Melbourne on 8 January, 2010.Ms Maughan, who was born on 15th September 1933, launched her career on the stage at the Union Repertory Theatre Company in the 50s and appeared in more plays for that company than any other actor.In 1971 she won the Melbourne Theatre Award for Best Actress for her role as a pregnant spinster in Donald Howarth's Three Months Gone. Ironically she herself was three months pregnant at the end of the play's run.During her career she worked for every major theatre company in Australia.Her best known stage role was as Miss Prism in the Melbourne Theatre Company's The Importance Of Being Earnest. The production, co-starring Geoffrey Rush, toured Australia from 1988-92 and was televised by the ABC.She also appeared in many films, including Strange Bedfellows (2004), Crackerjack (2002), Road to Nhill (1997) and Mrs Craddock's Complaint (1997). Her last film role was in Blessed, in 2009.Her television roles included prim secretary Jean Ford in the series The Box (1974–75) and prisoner Pat O'Connell for five months in women's-prison drama Prisoner Cell Block H (1979).She received an AFI Award and a Silver Logie Award for her role as Monica McHugh in the ABC's black comedy mini-series, The Damnation of Harvey McHugh (1994).
