One might think it is hard to miss someone if you had never met them but because of your support and contributions to blogs then one does gain an impression of the sort of guy you were. But it is now you are gone that one recognises your goodness even more so. A pillar of MyT and of the Charioteers. Bon voyage Doug for I feel i can call you by your real name.

O Zangado

Dear Vivienne
I was, I hope, a 'friend' of Doug's on Boadicea's Chariot and previously on the Daily Telegraph website. I hope you will understand the intrusion at this sad time.
I had no idea Doug was ill and was unexpectedly moved by his passing. As a widower myself after only 25 years of marriage all I can say is that it won't get any easier over the coming weeks, months and even years - you just learn to cope with it better. There is nothing else I can add except that I respected Doug as an ex-soldier and a robust and very erudite cyber-debater. We talked last year about you both visiting me in Portugal at some future date (you were less than an hour away when you flew out from Faro) and I shall forever mourn the lost opportunity to raise a glass with you both.
With my sincerest condolences to you and to your family.
Clive (O Zangado)
