NANCY OVERTONAmerican pop singer Nancy Overton, who was a member of the chart-topping group The Chordettes, died on 5 April, 2009 at the age of 83.She joined the female barbershop quartet in 1958, after one of the other members, Janet Ertel, announced she no longer wanted to go on tour.Overton was invited to appear with The Chordettes for live appearances and did so until her second son was born in 1963.During the 1950s and early ’60s the quartet had 13 Top 100 songs, their biggest hits being Mr Sandman and Lollipop. Mr Sandman topped the American charts for seven weeks in 1954 and sold over one million copies. The record also reached number 11 in the UK charts. Lollilop, released in 1958, reached number two in the US and again sold over a million copies, becoming a worldwide hit.Overton started out in the music business with her sister, Jean Swain, and went on to sing with another group, The Heathertones before joining The Chordettes.
