I first found out about Alan when his bus books were published. I have a number of his great works.
Alan and I shared a common interest in buses, particularly in the Nottingham area where I grew up, and especially Barton Transport. I regard Alan as being the foremost authority on this fleet other than perhaps the Barton family.
I was pleased to be able to meet Alan and his wife Barbara during my last visit to Nottingham in 1990. From that point onwards we often exchanged cards at Christmas and I treasure those he sent me containing photos of the old fleet. I in turn would send him photos of buses from a company in NZ which has many parallels with Barton being family owned and has grown by acquiring smaller firms.
I have only just become aware of Alan's passing although I suspected that he had gone when I never heard from him last Christmas.
My belated condolences to all Alan's family and friends wherever they may be. He will be much missed and I hope his substantial contribution to recording the histories of Nottingham area's bus fleets is never forgotten. RIP Alan
