PETE QUAIFEPete Quaife, founding member of The Kinks, died on 24 June, 2010, aged 66.The bass player founded the seminal British band in 1962 with his school friend Dave Davies.Quaife played bass and sang backing vocals on the band’s era-defining hits, making six albums and enjoying success on both sides of the Atlantic. His Kinks career was interrupted briefly in 1966 when he broke his leg in a car accident. His temporary replacement was John Dalton who took over permanently when Quaife left in 1969 after tiring of infighting in the group. His next band was the country-rock band Mapleoak whose name reflected the Canadian and British nationalities of the members.Quaife, who hailed from Devon, quit the music industry in 1970 and emigrated to Denmark. Working as a graphic artist, he moved to Canada in 1980. There he gave his only comeback performance with the Kinks, joining them for an encore at the end of a Toronto show in 1981.He was also present when the band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.Ill health in later years saw him put on dialysis, but he turned his experience into a cartoon book, The Lighter Side of Dialysis, published in 2004.
