JoanPETERSOf Rishton passed away on October 9th aged 98 years. Joan started work at the age of 16 at ROF working 12 hour shifts seven days a week until the end of the war. She met Tom at Rishton roller skating ring when she was 15 and Tom was 18, shortly after meeting they were parted when Tom had to leave to serve in the war. Tom returned from the war and Joan and Tom married on August 25 1945 in Darwen. They made their first home in Huncoat and they were blessed with two children David born in 1947 and James born in 1948. After a few years in Huncoat Joan and Tom moved to Rishton. Joan became a mother and housewife and as her children grew up, in 1958, Joan started work at Mullards as a press operator, she then took the opportunity for a career change to school caretaker at Rishton Methodist, a job she loved. Following her retirement Joan stayed on to help children to read. Many children remembered Joan and the help she had given them and still came to say hello many years later. Joan enjoyed many hobbies including Watercolour painting, reading, and writing poetry, reading history singing and gardening, she also enjoyed a hot air balloon ride for 80s Birthday over Pendle, her achievements included also learning to drive in her 50s. Joan enjoyed DlY, independently redecorating her home on a regular basis throughout. She enjoyed travelling and was also a member of St Mary ladies. Joan regularly attended St Charles Catholic Church in Rishton and at St Mary’s Church in Oswaldtwistle. Joan leaves behind son James, daughters-in-law Anita and Barbara and grandchildren Lynne, Helen, Joanne and Martin and great grandchildren Mia, Ellie, Beth and Sophie. Joan was the mother of the late David who passed away 24 years ago. A Requiem Mass will be held on Thursday, October 20th at St Mary’s R/C Church, Oswaldtwistle, Accrington at 10.15am conducted by Fr Sean O’Brien.
