AllanPILKINGTONMr Allan Pilkington, of Baxenden, passed away peacefully in Springhill Care Home on Saturday, June 18, aged 93. Allan leaves his devoted family: his late wife, Amy, his son and daughter, David and Eileen, his daughter-in-law Sandra, his son-in-law, Gordon, his grandchildren, Matthew, Jordan, Joel, Rory, Lauren, and Sophie, and his 13 great-grandchildren, Kayden, Isabel, Ella, Ruby, Evie, Emily, Addison, Remy, Anderson, Isla, Darcy, Dexter, and Daisy. He was also a much loved uncle to Barbara and Gillian. Allan attended Hyndburn Park School until he was 14, when he began work at Howard and Bullough’s. Here he met Amy, the love of his life. They went on to spend 72 years happily married. Allan then went to work on the railways, driving steam trains. He was the fireman on the Royal train which brought the Queen to East Lancashire in 1955. Allan also spent some time working at Millers, where he used his skills to adapt vehicles for people with disabilities. He was always able to find a solution to overcome any particular problems. He ended his working life as an engineer at British Aerospace, working on the Lighting Fighter Jet, retiring at the age of 62. As a young man, Allan was an avid motorbike enthusiast, and he and Amy travelled to watch the TT on the Isle of Man. Touring the length and breadth of the country on a succession of bikes, they were the first motorcyclists in the borough to use crash helmets. Allan also enjoyed playing snooker, and this led to regular competitions taking place on the family snooker table. He also loved camping and caravanning, travelling with family and friends on holidays all over the country - a love which he has passed on to younger members of the family. We are truly blessed to have had Allan as our dad, grandad, and great-grandad. He will always hold a special place in our hearts. The funeral will be held on Friday, July 1, at 1pm at Accrington Crematorium, led by Angela Riding. Family flowers only; donations if desired to Only Foals and Horses c/o funeral director Hyndburn Funeral Services, Accrington.
