Derek Lenfestey Pilling was actually born in the Channel Islands and was one of the many children to be evacuated to our area during WW2. At the end of this war, he chose not to return to his roots and as previously reported owned a very successful ‘chippy’ in Bolton. His main passion however was that of Freemasonry and was an extremely knowledgeable and much respected high-ranking officer in several degrees in the Fraternity. He was also largely responsible for the creation of the Rossendale Masonic Hall - Ashday Lea – in Rawtenstall and was even often referred to as Mr Ashday Lea! Hardly a day went by without a visit from him and his wisdom and influence in the general running of the Hall will be sorely missed. Requiescat in Pace.
