Stephen AndrewPUGHIn memory of Stephen Andrew Pugh, aged 52, who died in the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester, on 8th February 2021 of a progressive degenerative condition, Neuropathy Ataxia Retinitis Pigmentosa (NARP) the outcome of which was accelerated by COVID-19. Stephen was a Welsh speaking, proud native, of Carmarthenshire, formerly of Penrhiw Pentrefelin Llandeilo until his move to Andover in 2000. Stephen dealt with his lifelong condition with bravery, sense of humour, kindness and a strength of character rarely seen. Due to his condition, Stephen was visually impaired from the age of 27 and when on a course to manage his lack of vision he met his future wife and love of his life, Vanessa. Following Vanessa's death in 2012, Stephen, along with his assistance dog, best friend and team mate Scott, became a well known and loved team around Andover, fund raising tirelessly for the charity 'Dogs for Good' and volunteering for various charities and causes. You could not speak of Stephen without speaking of Scott and vice versa. They were both on individual occasions recognised with the Pride of Andover awards, and many tributes have been written about them in the Andover Advertiser, Facebook and online. Sadly, a week before Stephen passed away, Scott died. Stephen was predeceased by his parents Gwynfor and Norah Pugh, his wife Vanessa and his pal Scott. His family and many friends both in Wales and Andover will miss his wonderful sense of humour and kindness. And his family would like to thank everyone for the kind words and wonderful memories they have shared about our very special baby Brother. enquiries to S. & J. Stephen was the youingest of 5 siblings, the strongest, kindest and bravest of us all, but he got the shortest straw with his health. Never did we hear him say why me or what did i do to deserve this or display any self pity while dealing with his problems.
He had three loves of his life firstly our Mother Norah whom he doted on, then his beloved wife Vanessa whom he adored and Scott whom he classed as his best friend. He would ring up and always have the same opening lines, in Welsh of course he’d say Hello Stephen here there’s nothing the matter and we’d say helo Cariad how are you his reply was were alright, even after Scott had long retired. We miss him dearly every day, he was simply our hero. All our love Anne, Diane, Christine and Brian xxxx
