I am a physician from Uganda in East Africa currently living in Connecticut, USA. I applied to train with Professor Michael Rawlins while in Uganda. He accepted me and I trained at the Wolfson Unit for Clinical Pharmacology in Newcastle upon Tyne from 1980 to 1983. The training I received from him was the foundation of my career as a clinical research physician in the pharmaceutical industry in the USA. Professor Rawlins kept in touch with me for all my career. He will be sorely missed. My condolences to his family.

In the 90s Mike was the part of the committee then chairman of the committee of safety of medicines at the time I worked for the MCA (now MHRA) and was often in meetings with him. He had a lot of wit and outside of the professional moments in committee had a good sense of humour. I will remember him for this and constantly chewing gum! My condolances to his family.
