REG DAVIESReg Davies, who died on 9 February, 2009, aged 79, was a Welsh footballer who played for Newcastle United and Swansea City.The inside forward helped the Swans win the Welsh Cup in 1961. He also won six caps for Wales.Born in Cymmer, Port Talbot, he toured theatres throughout Britain as a boy soprano immediately after leaving school. Giving up singing, he began his footballing career with local side Cwm Athletic after doing his national service.Initially with Southampton, he joined Southend United in July 1949 and scored on his league debut.Davies moved to Newcastle United for £9,000 in April 1951 and was unlucky to miss their 1955 FA Cup final success due to his having tonsillitis. He scored 50 goals in his 170 appearances with the club.Joining Swansea as part of the deal that took Ivor Allchurch to Newcastle in October 1958, he netted 29 goals in 111 league games and played in two European Cup Winners Cup games against East German side Motor Jena.He moved to Carlisle United in June 1962 before appearing for Merthyr and then King's Lynn.A spokesman for Swansea City said: "Reg was a respected player and person. He will be missed by many people."
