RHYS JONESwas just 11 years old when he was shot and killed as he walked home from football practice on 22 August, 2007.More than 2,500 mourners attended his funeral at Liverpool Cathedral.His father read a poem he had written for his young son and the footballer Alan Stubbs read from the Bible.His teachers and neighbours described him as a friendly and popular boy who was devoted to football. He had recently left Broad Square Primary School in Norris Green and was about to start secondary school.Rhys was a keen Everton fan and a season ticket holder. In the first game after his death players and fans paid tribute in a minute's applause.The youngster was born on 27 September, 1995, to Melanie and Stephen Jones. He had a 17-year-old brother named Owen.He had been walking home with two friends when a youth rode up to them on a push bike outside the Fir Tree pub, Croxteth Park, and fired three shots at members of a rival gang. Innocent schoolboyRhys, who was caught in the line of fire, was shot in the neck and died in his mother's arms shortly afterwards.
