RODERICK ROSSRoderick Ross, who was awarded an honorary doctorate to mark his contribution in founding Exeter University, died aged 94, on Christmas Eve, 2009.He helped the then University College of the South West of England to become a university, was its secretary for 25 years and helped it get the royal charter required to award its own degrees.He started work at Exeter University in 1949, before the completion of the Streatham campus, and during his time at the university student numbers rose from 900 to 4,500.Mr Ross originally worked as a lecturer in public administration but then became the university’s registrar in the early 1950s.He was involved in the negotiations with the Queen’s Privy Council, which granted Exeter its university charter at the end of 1955.The father of three retired from the university in 1975 and then worked in Africa, helping colleges in Botswana and Swaziland obtain university status.
