EileenSCOTTSunday, January 31 saw the passing of Eileen Scott, nee Walker, pillar of the local community, at the age of 89. Originally from London, Eileen came to Lancashire via Cumbria in the early 1970s when husband Andy was appointed Deputy Head of Hollins School in Accrington. Eileen was involved in college lecturing in business studies in Blackburn and Bolton before taking early retirement during the 1980s. In her early years in retirement, she acted as chief examiner of A-level law nationwide for the AEB examination board, while recommencing voluntary work at the Citizens Advice Bureau in Accrington. The 1990s saw an ever increasing role in the NHS, initially as chair of staff appeals panels. Eileen became a champion of consumer and employee concerns. She had many roles and responsibilities during the next 20 years, including Conciliator for the Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Health Trust, Chair of Patient Transport across Lancashire, Vice-Chair of Blackburn Royal Infirmary, and a member of the North-East Lancs Health Authority. She was also involved in developing processes which granted recognition to foreign qualified medical staff seeking the right to work in the NHS. At the same time she maintained a lifelong interest in education. Following her husband’s retirement, she was invited to stand as a Governor of Hollins School and eventually ended her time there as Vice-Chair of Governors. She was also heavily involved in the Accrington based home care charity Crossroads, working extensively with current lead Jean Stoiles to develop and maintain a professional service to the County Council social services team. Mother to five and grandmother of eight, Eileen managed to combine this community work with a full home life. Happily married for almost 70 years, her life was topped off with being a loving parent, who enjoyed keeping up with current affairs, drinking wine and eating cheese, walking the dogs, and camping, then later cottage owning in rural France where she was a frequent visitor. She passed the last few years peacefully under the professional watchful care of the Belvedere Care Home in Accrington. The funeral was due to be held on Thursday, February 11, at 2.20pm at Accrington Crematorium, led by Neil Overton. Family flowers only please; donations if desired to SHINE c/o funeral director Hyndburn Funeral Services.
