SEAN LEVERTSean Levert, who died in prison on 30 March, 2008, aged 39, was a 1980s R&B singer best known for being part of the Grammy-nominated trio Levert.He was the son of Eddie Levert, lead singer of the soul group The O’Jays who had a string of chart successes in the ’60s and ’70s, and brother of Gerald Levert with whom he formed his band along with childhood friend Marc Gordon in 1984.Levert released four albums during the ’80s and had hit singles on the R&B chart such as Pop, Pop, Pop, Pop (Goes My Mind) (1986), My Forever Love (1987) and Addicted to You (1988).But they were best known for Casanova (1987), a song which reached number five in the pop charts and earned them two Grammy nominations, for ‘Best R&B Performance’ and ‘Best R&B Song’.They continued to record as a group in the 1990s, making three more albums, and both Levert brothers also released solo albums. A greatest hits package was released in 2001.Gerald Levert died on November 2006 at his home in Georgia after accidentally taking a lethal combination of medication.A week before his death, Sean Levert was sentenced to almost two years in prison for failing to pay more than $89,000 in child support.He fell ill in jail and was moved to Lutheran Hospital in Cleveland where he died less than an hour later. In May 2008 the county coroner ruled that he had died of natural causes and said he had been suffering from lung and heart problems prior to his death.Sean Levert was survived by his father.
