Jack brought a calm enthusiasm to teaching Physics at SFX that got through to even the stubbornest recalcitrants and moved their marks upwards. With the late Eddie Roberts, who taught geography, he shared an exceptional general knowledge with us that transformed lessons from rote learning to interactive sessions that always seemed to end too early. He was ever ready to field more questions if a class ended at break or lunchtime. He and John O'Malley turned the ship around after Fr Vincent Sermin had failed an entire year at O-level Physics (A, B & C forms and re-sitters included). He also, to the surprise of many, turned RI in the sixth form into a very grown up mode of looking at the realities of human experience, something at which very few Jesuits were particularly skilled. Paul Crookall, 5 rue de l'Abbaye Beaulieu-lès-Loches 37600 France.
