GurmitSINGHThe Life of Gurmit Singh

Born: 9 March 1958 Died: 14 January 2025 Occupation: Fundraising Consultant Married: Kulwant Kaur

Gurmit Singh died on 14 January 2025 at the age of 66 at Southmead Hospital. A deeply independent and intellectual man, he left a lasting legacy in Bristol and beyond through his unwavering commitment to community and equality.

Born in Bristol, Gurmit attended Bannerman Road Primary School and what was then St George Secondary School. He went on to become a trailblazer in Bristol's political history, serving as the first Asian and Sikh councillor for Avon County Council in 1989. His passion for social justice was evident in his tireless charity work with organisations such as ActionAid, Bristol District Methodist Youth Groups, CVS South Gloucestershire, and the Black Development Agency. Throughout his career, Gurmit worked on numerous projects supporting marginalised groups, including initiatives for youth clubs and other community-driven causes. He was deeply concerned with local issues, always striving to create meaningful change in society.

During his life, Gurmit was also a publican, spending several years running The Duke of York and The Swan with Two Necks. He spent countless nights socialising and dancing with patrons and will be affectionately remembered by all those he shared a drink with.

He had a quiet sentimentality, which he expressed in his own unique way. Though he valued his independence, he loved his children and especially doted on his grandchildren, sharing his love of music, knowledge, and thought-provoking conversation. He had a knack for giving gifts that were distinctive and meaningful, reflecting his creative and unconventional personality.

A proud Bristolian, Gurmit was also a passionate supporter of Bristol Rovers, fondly known as a true Gashead. His love for football and his local team brought him joy throughout his life.

Gurmit will be remembered as a man of intellect, conviction, and vision who was unafraid to challenge the status quo. His contributions to society and the lives of those he cared for will remain an enduring testament to his character.

Gurmit's funeral will be held on Tuesday 28th January, starting at Gurdwara Guru Nanak Prakash Singh Sabha at 1.00pm-2.15pm, followed by a service at Westerleigh Crematorium at 3.15pm.

Nana, clearly no-one can match your kindness. You were always a winner with every game you played! I learnt to never give up and to always try my best from all the time we spent together. I will always remember the lovely time we spent in Bournemouth on holiday and playing cards games with you was very fun. You were always an extraordinary man whom I admire deeply. I will never forget you and you will always remain in our hearts. Miss you so much, love from your grandson, Nihal ❤️🙏🏽👑

Listen, right: Gurmit Singh was a singular individual. Sikh Punjabi. Elvis impersonator. Gashead. Among many other things, he was also my father in law. A deeply thoughtful man, he was highly perceptive and often contrarian. Forcefully independent but community was a key part of his identity; as comfortable talking about the world’s religions as the last episode of Eastenders; and while he had a wide knowledge of food, he was happy with a kebab.

That combination was part of the reason he was able to relate to and communicate with anyone and everyone. I’ll always be grateful for the open and accepting way he welcomed me into the family. And I’ll remember the discussions we had about where the Labour Party was going wrong, the travails of following lower league football, and the overlooked parts of the Slade back catalogue. I’ll miss him, but I’m thankful I knew him.

Thank you Gurmit for. Ring our colleague, more recently our neighbour and always our friend. Who else really knew what it was about to follow lower league football? Who else knew how to share the joy of Elvis so infectiously? You worked honestly. Nd conscientiously whenever Jane and/or I work with you - especially at Barton Hill Settlement it was so upsetting to see your suffering in those last few months in Southmead
Rest in Deep Peace: A good soul in a good man

So many hours spent with Mr G., trying to save the world, explaining the meaning of life, or discussing the form of Bristol Rovers reserves. Happy times with us in France on several occasions. A buddy over many years. Big condolences to all his family and friends.

Furniture was a wonderful family man. He was a great father and father in law as well as a superb grandad.
On the occasions when we met we always had a good laugh and a good time, even if we didn’t solve the world’s problems!
He was one of the good guys and will be missed by all who knew him.
Steve and Jane.
