It was only by chance that today, cycling with a pal and mentioning Mike's name, that I learned of his recent passing.

Mike, you taught me more than you would ever know. You were patient and generous with your time, forgiving of the bravado of a young man trying to find his way in the world and to make a career in aviation. Where others saw cocksure arrogance, you recognised a spark of potential and kindled it carefully.

After a wonderful flying career, I have the good fortune to pass on to other young people the fruits of my knowledge, none of which would have been possible without your example. When trying to motivate a student in the right way, I still draw inspiration from you and wonder how you would have handled the situation and it always helps.

Thank you for all you did for me and for countless others. You were one of a rare breed, a gentleman of principle, willing to share knowledge hard-won, but always with a twinkle in your eye.

Rest Well, Sir.
