TERENCE EDMONDTerence Edmond, one of the stars of police drama Z-Cars, died at the age of 69 on 14 March, 2009.
Mr Edmond played PC Ian Sweet in more than 75 episodes of the show between 1962-1964.
His final appearance saw him drown in an heroic but misguided attempt to save a young boy. The episode went out live and as this was in the days before the media gave out spoilers weeks before programmes were screened, the death of his popular character caused a huge shock across the UK.
Mr Edmond was born in Bristol on 22 November 1939. He died in hospital from the lung condition bronchiectasis, from which he had suffered since childhood. He married in 1963 but divorced six years later and had no children.
One of his Z-Cars co-stars, actor James Ellis who played Bert Lynch, said he was "sweet by name and sweet by nature.
"He was a particular favourite of ladies old and young, who were devastated when the character was drowned on duty.
"Nothing quite like this had happened before. The nation watched the live episode and was simultaneously shocked."
Following Z-Cars, Mr Edmond had numerous roles in episodes of top TV shows including Bless This House, Poldark, Shoestring, The Persuaders, My Wife Next Door, The Saint and Paul Temple.
He wrote two episodes of television's Comedy Playhouse which aired in 1970 and 1972.
His final screen acting appearance came in The Bill in 1994 where he played a coroner's officer. In 2002 he appeared as himself when Z-Cars was the feature of an episode of After They Were Famous.
